1993 Miyata TripleCross

While this bike was one of the first “hybrid” or “cross” bikes during the early 1990s fitness boom, it is one of the ultimate early blueprints for the modern gravel and “all-road” bicycles. I restored this bike for Arlene and her son.

What makes this bike special

TRIPLE-BUTED SPLINED TUBING

Unlike almost every other major bicycle brand of the era, Miyata did not buy its steel tubing from outside suppliers like Reynolds or Columbus. They drew their own steel in-house.
TRIPLE-BUTED: The frame’s Cr-Mo tubes have three different wall thicknesses, placing extra material exactly where the frame experiences high stress (near the lugs) and shaving away weight where it isn’t needed (in the center of the tubes).
INTERNAL SPLINES: Miyata added spiral-shaped internal ridges (splines) inside the tubes. This aerospace-inspired tech gave the frame incredible torsional stiffness. It prevented the bottom bracket from flexing while keeping the ride plush, compliant, and lightweight.

“GRAVEL” GEOMETRY BEFORE IT EXISTED
The Triple Cross leveled the playing field between 26-inch mountain bikes and narrow-tired 700c road bikes by using 700c wheels with wider 700x38c or 700x40c knobby “gravel” tires on an indestructible steel frame with massive tire clearance. It made this bike a lot more stable than twitchy road racers, yet lighter and faster than heavy mountain bikes.

JAPANESE ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING
By 1993, Miyata was at its peak. The frame geometry was super precise, the investment-cast lugs were beautifully executed, and Miyata’s signature “7-step paint process” (which included a zinc phosphate rust-preventative undercoat) means these frames resist corrosion and retain their deep, gorgeous finishes much better than their contemporaries.

This is a perfect bike for vintage restoration and “neo-retro” modifications. Because the frame features a traditional 1-inch threaded headset, standard English bottom bracket threading, and cantilever/V-brake studs, it is a dream canvas for mechanics. It can be easily modernized with 1x drivetrains, drop-bar conversions, racks, tubeless gravel rubber, etc. It is a bulletproof do-it-all machine.
