1991 Specialized S-Works
I built this 1991 Specialized S-Works – based city commuter for Josh. It took almost a month to build this bike into an ultimate San Francisco street stomper. The all original S-Works triple-butted(!) CroMoly steel frame and fork were upgraded with Shimano Deore drivetrain and all custom components to bring Josh’s idea of a perfect city bike that can be taken off-road. Here is the best info on 1991 S-Works I can find.
S-Works bikes are not an ordinary bikes. The S-Works idea likely derived from Skunk Works – an official pseudonym for Lockheed’s Advanced Development Projects – an innovative undertaking, involving a small group of people, that is outside the normal research and development channels within an organization.
This, likely the world’s best steel frame, is not perfect cosmetically, and its inconspicuous appearance will save this bike from being primary theft target in the city. Its two badly scratched water bottle holders miraculously change the overall appearance of this bike into an ordinary beater…
Josh and I share the vision of a perfect city commuter: indestructible steel frame, raised handlebar for more comfortable riding position and better observation. I like Josh’s idea of using a squeeze horn instead of a traditional bell. The dinosaur head is rad! The point of the squeeze horn is to be polite and humorous – it brings a little levity to the city streets.
