The lightweight Schwinn Traveler bikes were produced from the early 1950s to the late 1980s for comfortable, casual riding, commuting, and recreational use. They are essentially road bikes designed to be durable and practical, with a relaxed, upright riding position, similar to the British “All Steel” bikes. Schwinn bicycles were guaranteed against all defects in materials and workmanship with no time limits.
I think the Schwinn 1964 Catalog was right – this is one of the world’s finest bicycles. Made in the USA. Light as a feather and ride like the breeze! Elegant, with rich 4-coats coppertone bake-in color, 3-speed internal gears, and stainless fenders. In 1964, this bike cost $66.95 – enough to pay a monthly rent for a studio in San Francisco.
NOTE: This bike has a Schwinn 26″ S-5 wheelset that requires Schwinn-specific 26×1-3/5×1-1/4 (597mm ISO) tires. The British 26×1-3/8″ (590mm ISO) tires are too small and will not fit. If you have an S-5 wheelset, make sure to buy only S-5 compatible tires. A standard 26×1-1/4″ or 26×1-3/4″ inner tubes will work with S-5 tires as they are flexible enough to accommodate the slight diameter difference.
